DIY Baby Dress

The other day, I was going through my closet and realized there were A LOT of things I didn't wear anymore (or bought and never wore after) and thought, instead of tossing it out or donating it, I wonder if I can upcycle them? So, that's exactly what I did.

I used a couple tanktops to make some super cute Knot Headbands (I stole the idea from my friend Tawnya here). Super easy to make and super cute! Thanks Tawnya!

Then, I was left with nearly a whole tanktop and wondered what else I could make with it...then it hit me. This is the exact perfect length for a baby dress. So, I searched the Internet for a tutorial or pattern but didn't find one that was simple enough for me that I liked, so I decided to just wing it!

So I started with a normal tanktop, and I flipped it inside out!

I folded up the bottom to make a hem. I didn't do it for this first one, but should have - Fold it up twice to have two nice sides (I only folded once in the first dress and can sometimes see the cut edge on the inside.) Then iron it flat and sew your hem.

Cut the sleeves apart and sew them back together at the appropriate length to fit your baby. I tried using a dress Palmer already has for sizing guesstimates.

Then sew the sides slightly to make smaller arm holes. Again, I used another dress as a template.

And cut off the excess fabric so it is not bunching inside the dress.

Then I turned the dress right-side out, added some accessories and there you have it, an upcycled dress from an old tanktop!
See here, you can see the unfinished edge on the inside - I should fix it because it is going to annoy me for a long time if I don't!
