What We Did Wednesday

It's been awhile since i have done a What We Did Wednesday update....
Being back at work fulltime has left me with little time with my family, which has left me with no time for blogging.

But, having the week off, and Palmer napping talking to herself in her crib, has left me with a small window of time to attempt to get one done!

Today, Palmer is sick. For the first time in 8.5 months.

Snotty nose.

Coughing.

Mean diaper rash (sorry...)

Just wants to be held and cuddled all day (which I am OK with).'

I swear her nose is like a faucet. And, she hates having it wiped!!!

I thought I could contribute her yucky nose to teething for the past couple of days, maybe in denial of her being sick. Mitch and I were both sick for a couple days (mine is still lingering). What was I thinking not thinking she would get sick too?

So, today is a wear your scrubbiest clothes, don't comb your hair, haven't had time to look in the mirror kind of day.


Good news though, is Grandma is coming today, so there is one more person to share the cuddles today!



Other than cuddling a sick baby today, we are just getting a few things done around the house today: laundry, paint touch-ups, and a whole lot of lounging around!

Positional Plagiocephaly: Part VI

Palmer has had her helmet for a week and a day now, and who would have thought we 'd have gotten so many stares and comments already?

How is this not the cutest little face wearing a helmet ever????

I knew there would be some staring and different people asking about the helmet. I just didn't think people were so tacky and ignorant!

Don't get me wrong, there are people who kindly ask about the helmet because they are curious and don't know why a baby would be wearing a helmet. There are those who tell us how cute Palmer looks in her helmet, and how they have known other children who have needed to wear one.

But then there are those other people...

....those who stare in the grocery store.

...those who make rude comments while walking through the Parade of Homes houses.

And you know who these people are? They are not children. They are not people our age. They are grown ups who should know better than to stare or make ignorant comments to people they don't know.

One man walked by us and rudely said "What's wrong with his head?"
Mitch and I just looked at each other, were silent for a minute, then said "She's a her."
Mitch and I were both holding back our rude reply to this man, like "what's wrong with you" or something along those lines, but that would be sinking to his level.

Oddly enough, I came across a fellow bloggers post yesterday about her baby wearing a helmet and how she got looks and comments like this too. She had a very positive attitude about it and made me realize even more that wearing a helmet is just a little "hiccup" in Palmer's life. We are fortunate that we are able to get one to correct her head shape and even more fortunate that this is the only issue Palmer is facing!

Ultimately I know that what these strangers think or say really doesn't matter, but it's difficult in that moment to not say something to protect your child.

I'm sure these next 4 months will fly by just as quickly as the last 4 months have. And we are so very lucky that Palmer has no issues wearing her helmet. She wears it like a champ!

I have actually been in contact with 2 girls from the Lethbridge area who have kids who are wearing helmets. It has been nice to be able to talk with them about what we are and what we will be going through on this helmet wearing journey!

5 on Friday

Palmer started swimming lessons this week. We really don't do much in them, but it's a good way to get out of the house, meet new babies, and plus, Palmer LOVES the water! I think Palmer was the splashiest little fish in the water on Monday!

 I had to go through Palmer's clothes yet again! She is now wearing clothes ranging from 6 months to 12-18 months, depending on the brand! I cannot believe how much stuff doesn't fit her anymore!!! And, I can't believe how fast she is growing out of all her clothes! Good thing a trip to Whitefish is in our near future - SHOPPING!!!!

I am going to Calgary on Monday to go wedding dress shopping with my sister-in-law! I've only ever been once before and that was for my own wedding! I can't wait to see her in some dresses!!!

Its starting to get pretty cool outside these days, and after working all week, I'd love to just spend a day in my PJ's, curled up on the couch with Mitchell, Palmer and Leaf, sipping a hot drink, and watching a movie!

So, yesterday was the day.

Yesterday, Palmer got her helmet.

Now, it really doesn't look as terrible as I thought it was going to, but it isn't the most attractive thing to say the least.

Surprisingly, she is warming up to it quite well, although tomorrow will be the real test. Tomorrow will be the first day of wearing the helmet for naps and bedtime.

They have a schedule set up for the first 5 days of having the Starband Helmet to ease the baby into wearing the helmet. Day one was 1 hour on, 1 hour off, no naps, no bedtime. Today was 2 hours on, 1 off, again, not on for naps or bedtime. Tomorrow gets bumped up to 4 hours and we start to include sleeping, then 8 hours, then 23 hours.

Mitch found a website that we can order some decals and stickers for her helmet to "bling" it up and add some personalization. Since this thing is going to be a huge part of Palmer for the next few months, we might as well make it look pretty, right?

There is a girl I have been in touch with who has a little boy the same age as Palmer who go fit for his Starband helmet the same day as us. We have been messaging back and forth about the helmets. It's nice to have someone going through the same situation as you; a good place to bounce thoughts and feelings off of, because likely, that family is feeling similar things.

I was most worried about the helmet being uncomfortable for her, but since it hasn't really seemed to bother her thus far, I think we may be OK. Once you put the helmet on, it really seems like Palmer doesn't even notice it.I had read on different websites that it takes a lot of getting use to and that baby's sleep habits will change for the first little while after getting the helmet. Here's to hoping that isn't (too much) the case for us.
